Dropshippers – Due to a recent update with Gelato’s tax exemption policy, you will only need to register for a sales tax ID and permit for your business state, DC, Maryland and Massachusetts.

Untick all the Canadian states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico as you would need a business location in order to register there.

For the following states you can use a Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) Resale certificate with any state’s registration number.

For the following states you can use the Uniform Sales Resale Certificate – Multijurisdictional (MTC) with any state’s registration number.

*IL, CA, PA, ID – If you don’t have a seller’s permit number for these states, write ‘no nexus’.

**SC, WI – Indicate the state of the registration number listed on the line.

***MN – You must mention the state and associated registration number.

A few states require specific state resale certificates:

  • Alaska – if you only make sales through a marketplace you can fill out the Marketplace Seller Affidavit and submit it.
  • Florida – For non-registered customers, a letter is acceptable in place of a state issued resale certificate to exempt sales on printed materials. Gelato has created a specific letter you can use for this purpose.
  • Louisiana – Louisiana is a special exception because if you are not registered within the state, a resale certificate is not required. In place of the resale certificate, a letter on company letterhead would suffice.
  • Mississippi – A retail certificate is not required in Mississippi and does not have a resale certificate. Therefore, a photocopy of a home state or MS retailer’s permit is allowed to support an exemption.
  • New York – Fill out their state specific form ST-120 without the need to register.
  • Virginia – Fill out their state specific form ST-14 without the need to register with the state.

You will also need to upload your business state resale certificate and DC, MA and MD resale certificates if you are registered there.

Seller information for the resale certificates is:

Gelato ASA

Postboks 47 Sentrum

0101 Oslo

Please note, the business name and address in the form must match registered business name and address on your business registration licence. The business name and address in the My Account section in Gelato must also match the information in the resale certificate.

Notes to help with the application:

– Write “E-commerce retail”, as the type of business you engage in.

– Choose “Retailer” if primarily selling to consumers, “Wholesaler” if primarily selling to other businesses.

– Write “Print-on-demand clothing, accessories and home & living items”, when asked to describe the property you intend to purchase from Gelato

Once the resale certificate is submitted and approved, sales tax exemption will apply to all of the stores that are connected to the Gelato account. It will take approximately a week for Gelato to review the information

Gelato will email if there is a problem or issue with one of the certificates. You can email the Gelato support team for help: https://www.gelato.com/uk/contact

Sales Tax Filing Responsibilities

Once you have a sales tax license in a state you will be required to file there on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis.  This is regardless of whether you’ve made any sales and even if no tax is due.
